If your trying to become more mature and have a well balanced wardrobe as a grown Man you should really invest in these items for your closet. These items will be the building blocks used for setting the foundation for a well balanced wardrobe.

Here are 10 Items (plus 2 bonus items) that every man should have in their closet.

1)White dress shirt
2)Well fitted/tailored suit
3)Dark blue jeans
4)Cardigan
5)Trench coat
6)Slim dress shoe
7)White t-shirts
8)Sport Coat
9)Sneaker
10) Watch
*Bonus*
11)Khakis
12)Boxer briefs

1) White dress shirt
Just like in the ladies staple the men definitely need these in their wardrobe, actually a stack of 6 good quality ones should do it. The white dress shirt is timeless and suitable for both formal and informal settings, great under a suit and cool& effortless with a pair of jeans. I would suggest spending a bit more on these due to the fact that they will be worn often and you want it to last. Try Brooks Brothers,Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic,Tommy Hilfiger and Club Monaco for good quality shirts.

2) Well fitted/tailored suit
By the age of 21 you should have at least one suit in your closet and it should fit you well. Buy a suit as if it feels like it was made for you or go Bespoke (made to your specification a bit pricier but so worth it) If bespoke is out of the question, buy one that is close to fitting perfect and have a tailor alter it for you so you look and feel like a million dollars. I suggest having (if you can afford too) a navy blue, black and grey suit in your wardrobe that will work well for every occasion.

3)Dark blue jeans
Jeans are something everyone should own. The jean has become apart of our daily uniform, they can be dressed up and dressed down and worn to several functions. A dark blue wash goes with almost everything (great with a casual blazer) and can be affordable depending on the style you may have in mind. I would suggest having at least 5 pairs, also buy a pair in bootcut and/or slim fit (sorry guys baggy is out) and that is free of unnecessary decoration.

4)Cardigan
These are great year-round item and so easy to layer with. It's a simple piece that works well with almost everything and is available in array of fabrics, cuts and flatters every physique. These are very inexpensive and can be bought at a number of stores. I would suggest having at least 4 in black, navy, grey and a fun color to match with different things in your closet.

5)Trench coat
Classic item that doesn't have a expiry date on it, this item is truly for . Great for all year round wear that is always elegant and durable through those harsh weather conditions.  I would suggest having 2 one in a classic beige/cream color and one in black for work or formal wear.

6)Slim dress shoe
No more chunky squared toed shoes guys! The more we progress the more fashion becomes very minimal and chic just like the slim dress shoe. Its a classic dress shoe with a modern look and feel, very sleek and sophisticated. These go well with suits for a formal look and depending on the occasion works well with jeans and khaki's. I would suggest having a slim pair with rounded or pointed toe in black and brown.

7)White t-shirts
Seems likes a no brainer right? Not necessarily lol. A lot of people under estimate the versatility of a white t-shirt. A t-shirt in general is a great item to have in your wardrobe. It comes in array of necklines and they are a great layering piece to go under a cardigan or blazer for a semi-formal look,or can be thrown on with your favorite pair of dark blue jeans to give a clean classic look. I would suggest having at least 6 of these, remember its white and can get dirty quick so having a good amount will come in handy. Try H&M, Zara, American Apparel and Marks Work Warehouse.

8)Sport Coat
Similar to the women's boyfriend blazer every man should have a sport coat. This item comes in handy when a suit is a tad too formal and a plain button-down won't do, throw on a sport coat with just about any pants (jeans, khakis, suit pants of a contrasting color) and you're good to go. I would suggest having 2-3 of these in your closet in a dark gray, navy and medium brown which will match navy, black, brown, khaki, and denim.

9)Sneaker
We all have our days when we have errands to run or just lounging around with friends/family that requires us to be as comfortable as possible and that's where the sneaker comes in handy. A neat, clean, low cut sneaker screams cool and casual that work well with khaki's, chinos and jeans. I would suggest the classic converse chuck taylor style, Ked's canvas shoe, Nike SWEET classic leather, Reebok men's npc ii classic sneaker or Adidas Campus shoe 2.0 in either white, black or your favorite color.

10)Handsome Watch
All grown men should own a watch, I don't care how cool your new iPhone is or you new hi-tech gadget that cooks and tells time, It's something that you should have and know how to use. Your watch speaks of maturity and elegance and should be worn on your left hand not right! If you don't want to appear flashy but still sharp get a leather strap in either brown or black, for my really casual guys a everyday stainless watch will work well and for my fellas that like a bit of a "wow" factor a nice high-end watch. The brands I would suggest (from low price points to higher end) Fossil, Kenneth Cole, Seiko, Diesel, Swiss Army, Emporio Armani, Rolex, Omega and Breitling.

11)Khakis
These are great for the guy who likes to do the business-casual look often. They are very classic and can be worn with cardigans, sport coats or sweaters. These pants should be worn in straight leg or slim fit so you don't look to frumpy and can be bought at every price point. I would suggest having one of these for your closet and you can buy from H&M, Club Monaco or J.Crew.

12)Boxer briefs
Sounds weird right? But just like how men don't like seeing women wear frumpy like underwear we don't like seeing you with a diaper like bulge at the back of your pants. The boxer brief is the happy medium between your childhood briefs and your teen age baggy boxers. Briefs can be too tight and give a weird underwear line printout and the boxers can give you extra bulge that trust me doesn't look attractive. The boxer brief works well because the a form fitting and don't leave any lines or extra bulge either. I'm not too familiar with the brands but I'm going to suggest Tommy Hilfiger, Joe Boxer and Emporio Armani.
